Los Angeles Photographer - Dana Hursey My stepdad, was an editorial photographer and was my inspiration. He always had a camera in his hands and I remember my mother, siblings and I constantly being chased by his lens so that he could capture his Henri Cartier Bresson's "decisive moment."

When I was drafted to do my junior high school's first yearbook at age 12, my dad gave me one of his cameras, a Minolta SRT101. Being on the other side of the lens was a completely different experience; it gave me the creative freedom to view the world in my own way.

In high school I visited Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. When I walked into the photography gallery the impact was instant, I knew I had to become a photographer!

After graduating from Art Center I opened my own studio. Both my technical knowledge and strong point of view have allowed me to work and play well with others. My passion for people, products and places has given me the freedom to work with editorial, design, annual report and advertising clients.

When I am not behind the camera or in front of the computer these days I'm remodeling my modernist home designed by noted architect Gregory Ain, traveling or trying to stay on top of repairing my 1964 Red Lincoln Continental Convertible – not an easy task but nothing worthwhile is. I just make it look that way.

CALIFORNIA PHOTOGRAPHER

In addition to Dana utilizing completely up to date and modern digital technologies, he also looks to the future to hopefully transcend being known as just one of the premiere California photographers. Like anyone else, Dana Hursey hopes to take advantage of seeing more of the world at some point like he did in October of 2006 when he worked on an international project.

“!4 Days in Great Britain” was released as a feature length DVD and chronicled a journey across the United Kingdom in August of 2005. The second in what is planned as an ongoing series over the next decade focusing on people from around the world, it features interviews with hundreds of individuals during Dana and his group’s two week journey. In addition, it follows its creator David Gibbons on his mission to bring people together through the mediums of film and photography and, of course, features portrait photography that Dana took while on the journey. For someone who is usually confined to being a Los Angeles based digital photographer, the trip afforded Dana the chance to spread his wings both professionally and personally. He looks forward to future trips and “meeting more amazing individuals from around the world that make up this complex and simple culture we call humanity”.

Art Center College of Design - He studied both Photography and Film and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree.

Dana has been an instructor at UCLA and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena for many years. He has also served as President of the Alumni Council, and held many public and private workshops, and taught classes in a wide array of Photographic disciplines. In addition, he created the “Saturday High” photography class at Art Center for High School students. He is frequently asked to speak at symposiums and has appeared on several “reality” and “how to” shows as the featured expert. Most recently, Dana was the featured speaker and exhibiter at 2007 White Sands Film Festival.
